Course Description

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of effective practices to build a culture and community centered on engaging vocabulary instruction, learning, and usage. Participants will gain insights into prioritizing and sequencing vocabulary words within individual CTE courses or across multiple courses or programs. Through the lens of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), attendees will learn to develop new learning activities and resources that cater to the diverse needs of students, including the needs of English Language Learners. The course fosters collaboration by connecting a community of CTE teachers from across New York to share and apply ideas and resources for rich vocabulary instruction in CTE courses and programs. Participants will learn to map CTE course or program vocabulary and activities to provide students with authentic contexts for vocabulary engagement within the curriculum. Special emphasis is placed on supporting multilingual learners through the creation of vocabulary-based learning activities and routines tailored to their needs. In each module of the course, participants will engage with research-based information and strategies for vocabulary instruction for multilingual learners.

What am I going to get from this course?

In this course, participants will:
-Explore best practices around building a culture and community of engaging vocabulary instruction, learning, and authentic vocabulary usage.

-Learn how to prioritize and sequence vocabulary words in an individual CTE course or across multiple courses or programs.

-Apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to vocabulary instruction through the creation of new learning activities and resources.

-Connect with a community of CTE teachers from across New York to share and apply ideas and resources for rich vocabulary instruction in CTE courses and programs.

-Map CTE course or program vocabulary and learning activities such that students have opportunities to engage with vocabulary in authentic contexts within the CTE curriculum.

-Create vocabulary-based learning activities and routines that support multilingual learners in CTE courses.

-Engage with research-based information and strategies for vocabulary instruction for multilingual learners in each module of the course.
